Create the GitLab application

For your users to sign in to Astrolabe with GitLab, GitLab must know Astrolabe: you create an application there, and it gives you an Application ID and a Secret.

You do it once. You need an account that can create applications on your GitLab: your own (User settings › Applications) or, for a GitLab you run yourself, the Admin area › Applications.

Before you start

You need the address of your Astrolabe, as your users open it. The Callback URL that GitLab must call back is:

<Astrolabe address>/api/auth/gitlab/handler/frame

For https://astrolabe.example.com, that is https://astrolabe.example.com/api/auth/gitlab/handler/frame.

🔑 Create the application

  1. In GitLab, open User settings › Applications, or Admin area › Applications if you are creating it for the whole instance.

  2. Fill in the form:

    FieldWhat to enterExample
    NameA name of your choiceAstrolabe
    Redirect URIThe callback address abovehttps://astrolabe.example.com/api/auth/gitlab/handler/frame
    Scopesread_user, openid, profile and email
  3. Save the application. GitLab shows the Application ID and the Secret. Copy both.

These screens were not checked on a live GitLab: the steps come from the help of Astrolabe's form, which names the scopes and the callback address.

✅ That's it!

Next: Configure GitLab sign-in in Astrolabe.
